About Us

Welcome!! We are Mark and Dona Stafford, the owners of the Virginia City Bed & Breakfast.  As Nevada residents since our childhood, we have always held a fondness for Virginia City.  In 2001, we were married at the Mackay Mansion. In April 2022, we purchased this home and began adding some TLC and helping preserve this wonderful 147 year-old home.  When you walk in you are pleasantly welcomed by the original staircase and the Tahoe Pine floors.

This home was originally owned and built by Mr. Peffler in 1876, just one year after the Great Fire of 1875 which destroyed most of Virginia City.  Mr. Peffler was a local businessman operating as a wholesale and retail butcher.

In 1962 the home was purchased by renowned western artist Clarence “Cal” Bromund. After restoring the home, Mr. Bromund operated an art gallery during the 1960s and 1970’s. He also offered instruction to art students in his studio prior to his death in 1979.

The Governor's Suite is so named because of the rare William S. Wooten desk located there. It is believed to have arrived in Virginia City in the mid-1870s during the peak of the Comstock Lode. The desk was likely used by a well-to-do businessman or mine owner and enjoyed a colorful past. It was acquired by a local Virginia City museum business in the early 1960s. Paul D. Laxalt (1922-2018) served as Nevada Governor from 1967 to 1971 and U.S. Senator from Nevada from 1974 to 1987. The desk was loaned to Laxalt for use in his personal office in both the State Capitol and while serving in the U.S. Senate.

This home has seen many changes in the last 147 years. Its’ charming and welcoming vibe remains the same and we look forward to you staying with us on your next visit to Virginia City.
