Restaurants
If you haven’t been to Virginia City in a while, availability and menu choices have greatly improved in the last year. Expanded menus and new restaurants ranging from Korean to high-end steakhouse, the food scene could certainly be described as “eclectic”. Of course, you can still keep it simple with a hot dog from the Silver Queen, a great burger at the Firehouse Saloon and Grill from their outdoor BBQ, or a fresh-made breakfast sandwich at The Roasting House where they roast the coffee beans on-site. The best part is you can pretty much walk to everything. Here are some other notables.
Crazy Calamities at the Historic Cider Factory is a local’s favorite serving a great breakfast and lunch with some unique twists. (Potato Balls anyone?) They are found on South B Street approximately one block west of the Historic Fourth Ward School. Weather permitting, there is a large outdoor patio area for dining. The indoor dining room is part of the Historic Cider Factory featuring exposed rock and stone walls with central fireplace. The Cider Factory is purported to have been constructed in 1863 and survived The Great Fire of 1875. This is a dining experience you can only find in Virginia City. Crazy Calamities is open 6am to 3pm Thursday through Monday. Beginning in February 2025 they will be serving dinners twice a week.
Should you be in the mood for fresh, authentic Southwestern Tex-Mex, then Cafe Del Rio is the choice for you. Originally a grocery store and rooming house, the cafe pays homage to its historical roots, while serving consistently-good food from a menu made from scratch. Our favorites include the Little Blue Pot, Gospel Fried Chicken, and the Santa Fe Stack. Depending on the time of year, the Cafe Del Rio's hours do change so check ahead.
A favorite with visitors to the region, the Red Dog Saloon and Ruby's Pizza offer a large venue with a bar and family-friendly food menu. Pizza, wings, salads, nachos and sandwiches are featured (we recommend the Southwest Egg Rolls). The bar offers a wide selection of craft beers on tap to choose from. With indoor and outdoor stages, live music is a frequent event here. Heck, even Open Mike Night Wednesdays have live musicians! You can dine in and soak up the authentic western atmosphere, or call ahead to pick up your food order. The Red Dog Saloon is sure to be a memorable Virginia City experience.
Located next door to the Silver Queen Bar and Hotel is the Kitchen Sink. This family-operated bakery offers delicious breakfast and lunch items. Outside one can see fresh-baked goods in the window, but it is much better to come inside and smell all the great smells in person. Cookies, pastries, loafs of bread, croissants, fresh-made cold and hot sandwiches-its' all here!
In the heart of Virginia City is the recently reopened Delta Saloon. This historic property features a large bar, music stage, gift shop, and a large open dining and game area. On the north side of the building is the just opened Sawdust Steakhouse. The name "Sawdust" references an historic Virginia City location. The second floor offers another kitchen and large banquet area. Fine dining in the steakhouse occurs Thursday through Sunday. A separate menu with food service is available seven days a week in the bar area from 11am to 9pm.
